Founded in 1907 as Societa Bergamasca di Ginnastica e Sports Atletici Atalanta, Atalanta Bergamo is an Italian club based in Bergamo, in the Lombardy region. Although the Lombardy club won its first trophy in 1963 with Coppa Italia, the title is the main achievement of Atalanta's players to date.
At the end of the 2018-19 season, Atalanta finished in third place in Serie A behind Napoli and Juventus Turin, qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League for the first time in its history. Consecutive to the 2019-20 season of Serie A in which the team finished 3rd, the club succeeded in qualifying for the next Champions League. They ended the season with the best attack of the championship as well.
In the 2020-21 Champions League group stage, and within Group D consisting of Liverpool, Ajax Amsterdam and Midtjylland, the club finished in second place behind the Reds, thus qualifying for the Round of 16.
The team has been coached since 2016 by Italian technician Gian Piero Gasperini, a former player of US Palermo and Delfino Pescara 1936, Marco Verratti's training club. After the 2021-22 Champions League group stage, the Italians ended at the 3rd position behind Manchester United and Villarreal. Qualified for the Europa League, they were defeated by RB Leipzig in the Round of 8, after having deafeated Bayer Leverkusen of Moussa Diaby in the previous round.

With a capacity of more than 24,000 seats, Gewiss Stadium is the official venue of Atalanta Bergamo. Formerly known as Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, its current name is the result of a naming agreement with Gewiss, an Italian company based in Bergamo. For the record, it was Colombia's Duvan Zapata who scored the first goal in the history of Gewiss Stadium. In the 2019-20 season, Atalanta recorded notable home victories against AS Roma (3 - 1), Salernitana (8 - 2) and Monza (5 - 2).
Located on the northern outskirts of Bergamo, Gewiss Stadium is accessible by public transport, via bus lines 3, 6 and 9, as well as by car from the SS470 road axis.
