FC Girondins de Bordeaux in short

FC Girondins de Bordeaux was founded in 1881, and as such is one of the Ligue 1 Uber Eats’ oldest clubs. Prior to Frédéric Longuépée taking over the chairmanship on December 2018, FCGB had been run by the emblematic Jean-Louis Triaud for 21 years. Bordeaux are one of France’s most successful teams, with 6 Ligue 1 Uber Eats trophies, 4 French Cup titles and 3 League Cup. Their European record is also commendable: they reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2010 and the final of the UEFA Cup in 1996, losing to Lyon and Bayern Munich respectively.

In the summer of 1992, France legend Zinédine Zidane joined the club, which was coached by the wily Rolland Courbis at the time – it was in Gironde that, alongside other future FIFA World Cup-winners like Christophe Dugarry and Bixente Lizarazu, Zidane would reveal the full extent of his talent, and pick up the now famous nickname “Zizou” along the way.

The Garonne derby pits Bordeaux against Toulouse, in a rivalry that has often given rise to memorable matches. For example, on December 2, 2007, at Stade Chalban-Delmas, the derby finished 4-3 in Bordeaux’s favour, with Pierre Ducasse scoring the winning goal in the 87th minute.

The 2020-21 season was complicated for Bordeaux. The club has been eliminated in the first round of French Cup and the players also struggled to maintain their place in Ligue 1 Uber Eats. Nonetheless, wins over Lens and Reims on the last 2 matchdays allowed the club to save its place in first division.

On February 17, 2022, the club made official the arrival of David Guion on the bench of Girondins de Bordeaux. The former coach of Reims will aim to maintain the club in Ligue 1, succeeding to the ex-coach of Lazio and Switzerland, Vladimir Petkovic, who was appointed on July 27, 2021.
