FC Nantes in short
Football Club de Nantes were founded in 1943 with the merger of five different clubs. Since August 2007, FC Nantes have been presided over by Waldemar Kita, who won France Football’s Club Chairman of the Year award in 2014. Their honours to date include 8 French league titles, 4 French Cup and 1 League Cup, and playing over 100 matches in European club competitions.
One of France’s best-known clubs, FC Nantes are also famed for their La Jonelière youth academy, which has produced a number of France internationals and World Cup winners, among them Didier Deschamps, Marcel Desailly, and Christian Karembeu.
On December 8th, 2020, the club announced the dismissal of Christian Gourcuff, former coach of FC Lorient and Stade Rennais. After a short stint of Raymond Domenech on the bench, Antoine Kombouaré was named coach on February 10th, 2021. The former player and coach of Paris Saint-Germain succeeded in keeping the club in Ligue 1 Uber Eats.
Despite their excellent results in the final matchdays of Ligue 1 Uber Eats 2020-21, Nantes had to participate in a play-off against Toulouse because of a loss on the last matchday in the first division, which brought the team to the 18th place. Even though the team lost its home game (0-1), Nantes’ players will stay in Ligue 1 Uber Eats next season thanks to their win at Toulouse (2-1).
Consecutive to its victory in the penalty shootout against AS Monaco in the semi-final, the club was facing OGC Nice on May 8, 2022, as part of Frenc Cup final. At Stade de France, and thanks to a goal from Ludovic Blas from the penalty spot, FC Nantes won their first title since 2001, the year of their last French championship title.
